Darryl Johnson, West Assembly of God discusses where God dwells.
If someone were to ask you this question, how would you respond? We know the obvious answer – God is everywhere. But can we be more specific? Some people are, and say if there is a God, he cannot be known. Others say He dwells in and around the things they enjoy and are convinced God lives only within their circle of living. For others, when there is tragedy or pain, God lives far, far away. Have you ever felt that God is stuck on planet Pluto? Specifically, where does God live?
Isaiah 57:15 reveals the two places God lives. For thus says the high and exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy, “I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit, in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Two places: high up and in a humble person. In a few chapters later, this high and holy place is described thus: “Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool, where then is a house you could build for Me?” Heaven is amazing beyond description. The other location, however, is more precise. God lives in the person who is contrite, humble, lowly and broken. Contrite means to be crushed or crumbled. So here is our truth for today: God will live in us if we control our egos and surrender to Him. God will dwell with us if we will quit thinking too highly of ourselves. He rooms with us when our will and pride is broken. God takes up residence in the person who honors Him above self. The Bible says God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
We live in a culture that glorifies humanity and self. Is it any wonder God seems far off? We will know His mighty presence, power and victory when we get off our high horses. We will experience His revitalization and peace when we subject our will to His. Make sure God lives inside you.
