Fowler girls finished fourth place at the La Junta Holiday Shootout last weekend.

The Fowler High School girls’ basketball team won one game and lost two for a fourth-place finish at the 23rd Annual La Junta Holiday Shootout this past weekend.
“The girls played hard and worked hard,” said Fowler coach Becky Hershey. “It didn’t come out the way we had wished in the end.”
The Lady Grizzlies opened the tournament with a 47-33 win over Sanford. Fowler took a 13-8 lead after the third quarter and it extended the lead to 26-17 at the half.
The Lady Grizzlies took a double-digit lead in the third quarter leading 38-22 at the end of the period.
Two Fowler players scored in double figures. Freshman Morgan Price led the team with 15 points and senior April Gonzales added 12.
Tori Mortensen scored 15 points for the Lady Indians.
Fowler then lost to eventual tournament champion Las Animas in the semifinals 52-28. The Lady Trojans took off to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter and they increased the lead to 23-12 at halftime and to 37-19 after the third quarter.
Senior Jessica Rein was the Lady Grizzlies’ leading scorer with seven points.
Caitlin Johnson led Las Animas with 10 points and Anjelica Alvidrez was next with nine.
Fowler came out red-hot in Saturday’s game against Rocky Ford in the third-place game, leading 17-1 after the first quarter. Both teams scored 12 points in the second half as the Lady Grizzlies led at halftime by a score of 29-13.
The momentum then took a major turn in the third quarter as the Lady Meloneers came out on fire. Rocky Ford scored the first five points of the period, and after a lay-up and free throw by Rein, Rocky Ford came back with 14 unanswered points to tie the score at 32-32.
Nicole Waggoner’s 3-point basket briefly regained the lead for Fowler, but the Lady Meloneers scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 36-35.
Rocky Ford continued the momentum into the fourth quarter as it expended the lead to 41-35. The Lady Grizzlies scored six straight points to the score at 41-41, but they would score no more points after that as the Lady Meloneers scored the final 10 points of the game to win 51-41.
Gonzales led Fowler with nine points, followed by Chelsey Wager with seven.
For Rocky Ford, Jessika Kienitz and Kendyl Pearce both scored 12 points and Racquelle Lozano scored 10.
“We played some great teams,” Hershey said. “Las Animas, Rocky Ford and Sanford are all good teams. They work hard and they do a good job.”
Gonzales was named to the All-Tournament team.
Fowler (1-3) will play its final game before the holiday break on Friday as it hosts Calhan.
“We played them last year at the Fowler tournament and beat them,” Hershey said. But it’s a new year, so we’re going to go out, work hard and get after them.”
