Black Hills Engergy deliver boxes to needy families in Fowler

Ten years ago, Black Hills Energy employee Juan ”Tino” Lucero had a vision.  He wanted to make Christmas special for the children who were less fortunate than others.
“He would say, I want to bless the kids who don’t have much,” said Lisa Montanez a co-worker of Tino.
“Tino” worked for Black Hills Energy from 1974 until 2008, when he retired. Two years before his retirement he was diagnosed with cancer and sadly, shortly after retiring he lost his battle against the disease.
But each Christmas Santa Tino lives on, his fellow employees have continued his wishes and this year delivered food and gift boxes to 25 families in the Arkansas Valley.
The employees raise money for this project by holding a garage sale each year. Black Hills Energy Corporation buys all the turkeys for the food boxes, donations by community members and employees are also used to fund the project. Bausermans Market and Rocky Ford Food Market have also contributed to the Santa Tino project.
For the past two years several of the toys have been purchase at the Toy Dance held by the Elks Lodge in Rocky Ford.
Families are selected by referrals so if there is a family that you know of who might be in need, or you want to donate for 2011, contact Lisa Montanez, Black Hills Energy - Rocky Ford Office at 254-3323.
