Mark Udall will kick off the year with several stops in Colorado to tour facilities and meet with community leaders to focus on ways he can partner with them to grow jobs in the state.
Udall will join Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Governor John Hickenlooper and Senator Michael Bennet in Alamosa for a San Luis Valley Community Conversation. San Luis Valley was picked as one of three priority Colorado projects for President Obama's America's Great Outdoors initiative, and this meeting is a chance to discuss efforts to conserve the area's natural and cultural resources and to promote tourism and create jobs for the surrounding rural economies.
Later, Udall will visit the Fremont County Airport, which is seeking to expand its runway in order to accommodate more traffic, which would encourage tourism and help create more jobs. Colorado airports, like the one in Fremont County, provide billions of dollars in economic benefit by connecting businesses with global markets, supporting thousands of jobs and increasing tourism to various regions across the state. Fremont County's vibrant airport is also utilized by the Army and Air Force for training exercises, by UPS as a cargo hub, by the Colorado and the federal corrections departments for transporting inmates, and as a site for helicopter flight testing.
On THURSDAY, January 5, Udall will visit with athletes preparing at the U.S. Olympic Committee Training Center for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. During a tour of the facilities, Udall will hear about how the sports and outdoor industry contributes to good-paying jobs in Colorado Springs, followed by a lunch with the athletes to hear about their efforts to win a spot on Team USA.
