The Fowler TRAK (Try Random Acts of Kindness) Club, formerly EPYCS, gathered last Wednesday for a busy day of grant making and volunteerism. There was a total of $5,000.00 available to grant to Colorado non-profit organizations, and after careful consideration, the club is pleased to announce this year’s grant recipients. They are:

*Colorado’s Childhood Cancer and Disabilities Camps, Inc. - $1,250.00 – funds to go toward paying for families to attend the camp.

*Sage Services - $1,000.00 – funds to go toward the Meals on Wheels program.

*Blackburn Dennis Community Center - $1,000.00 – funds to go toward sidewalk repair and painting the outside of the building. Any monies remaining will be used toward counter tops and a display case.

*Zac’s Legacy Foundation, Inc. - $1,000.00 – Funds to go toward families in Colorado who have a child with cancer. These funds are used to help pay for mortgage/rent, utility payments, gas, lodging, groceries, and other daily expenses that the families face while their child receives cancer treatments.

*Friends of Fowler Public Library - $750.00 – Funds will be used for four computer cards, books on CD, and interactive games for children, as well as other possibilities to benefit the patrons of the library.

After selecting the grant recipients for the year, the TRAK students went to three different locations in the community to volunteer. Rearranging shelves and transporting old shelving to Park School for the Fowler Public Library were Kirsten Grasmick, Alexa Major, Tye Stephens, Hannah Switser, Keeley Fillmore, Brandon Grasmick and Michaela McMahan. The Blackburn Dennis Community Center patrons were thrilled to have Cara Clock, Carissa Van Lienden, Kendra Taylor, Ally LaSater, Marissa Munger, Ben Long and Shelby Hartless decorate the building for spring and help serve the lunch meal. They also sang Happy Birthday to 95-year-old Dudley McFarland, which was a special moment for all participants. Over at the Fowler Daycare, Chelsey Wager, Bethany Moss, Emily Long, Zoe Fedde, Hannah Berumen, Jessica Rein, Megan Hollenbeck and Tamara Tunink hosted the “Itty Bitty Olympics” to coincide with the 2010 Winter Olympics. Curling, Wax Paper Skating, the Luge, hockey and the snowball throw were among the exciting events that took place. After the competitions, each child was awarded a medal.

Each member of the TRAK Club is also required to perform five hours of community service each semester outside of Club activities. They would like to thank everyone for their support of the Split the Pot fundraiser at basketball games and also for those applying for grants. While El Pomar foundation will no longer be a financial part of the TRAK Club next year, volunteer programs and community service projects are still planned to continue with students volunteering time and energy to make this community the best it can be.
