Fowler School Board members met Monday evening and were updated on developments with Honeywell Corporation. Representative Gary Berngard talked with the board about options for continuing projects in the district despite not being able to secure funding late in 2009. Honeywell originally conducted an audit of the school buildings and developed a plan to replace or repair various items including lighting, fire alarms and duct work. However, since the proposed grant funding fell through, Fowler School District is under no obligation to continues its relationship with Honeywell. Berngard did present other options, most of which involved the District borrowing money. Board members later voted to end the contract.
Board President, Suzanne Anarde, said, “Personally, I think we are in no condition to make any decisions or recommendations concerning spending money, given the current budget situation.”
Secondary Principal, Russell Bates, reported 20 high school students have qualified to attend the State FBLA convention in Aspen coming up in April. “Mrs. Dorenkamp has done a great job,” commented Bates.
Bates also reminded the board about CSAP testing March 8 through March 11, and parent teacher conferences March 8 and March 10, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Superintendent and Elementary Principal Steven Grasmick told the board enrollment in the elementary school is remaining steady at 228 students. Several activities have kept students busy including Pennies for Patients which recently ended. Nearly $1600 was raised for children affected by cancer. Grasmick also reported fifth and sixth grade students have placed well in Quiz Bowl competitions.
Board members discussed a proposed solar project with Vibrant Solar anticipating a presentation from company representatives in the near future.
Final plans for the GOCO athletic field project are being finished and will go out to bid soon. Construction is expected to be completed during the summer.
