The Clean Valley Recycling Center at Swink is open every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This Saturday, New Year's Eve, the La Junta site at the corner of Third and Adams will be open from 9 a.m. to noon as usual, and a Fowler site opens on Saturday, Jan. 7. They are happy to take your Christmas wrappings and cardboard. They sort out the ones with too much plastic or foil. Plastics may be recycled in the recycle bags as always.

On Wednesday, the center received an unusually large windfall of cardboard, part of it contributed by the prison. They are also happy to take plastic in the recycle bags and electronic equipment. Free drop off at Swink includes all types of cardboard, cartons (such as milk and juice), metals (aluminum, steel, tin cans, washers, dryers, no freon), paper (news, office, shredded, magazines), Kitty Litter buckets, five gallon buckets, cattle supplement tubs, triple-rinsed ag chemical jugs, glass bottles and jars (all colors), microwave ovens.

Cardboard is the single largest component of waste from businesses going to the landfill and is one of the easiest to recycle. The center has a large compactor and baler for cardboard. Break down and flatten the cardboard and stack in an intact box. You may bring cardboard to a drop-off point or call to have it picked up for a minimal fee. Call 468-0254 to set up a schedule.

Recycling locations include Swink Sugar Factory, La Junta, Rocky Ford, Manzanola, Las Animas, Lamar, Karval Community Alliance and Walsh. For more information, call 468-0254. They even recycle paint! Hostetler said, "First re-use, then recycle. Re-using is even better than recycling." New Year's resolution possibility?
