Aaron and Isaac Johnson of Fowler recently competed in the North American Rodeo Trick Riding Championships held at Las Vegas, Nevada. Held Dec. 4-7 during National Finals Rodeo week, the competition was staged at the Las Vegas Convention Center and at Horseman’s Park. Traveling and competing with Aaron and Isaac was their trick riding partner, Lexi Shawcroft of La Jara, Colorado.
Top riders from across the United States and Canada gathered in La Vegas to compete and perform various horseback tricks such as regular vaults, cartwheel vaults, fender drags, shoulder stands, hippodromes, spin the horn, under the neck, splits to the neck and crupper vaults.
Riders competed in three rounds of five runs each round. Judging was based on accuracy, form, difficulty, showmanship as well as the horse’s performance.
In the open men’s category Aaron placed 3rd and Isaac placed 4th. In the teen women’s category, Lexi placed 4th. In total points scored among all participants, Aaron placed 5th overall and Isaac placed 6th overall.
These three riders have been trained by Karen Vold and Linda Scholtz at Red Top Trick Riding School, Avondale, as well as at numerous Rodeo Bible Camps and clinics, and have performed at the Kid’s Rodeo in La Junta and the state fair in Pueblo. A former student at the Red Top won 1st place in the open women’s category, Kelsey Temmen.
