The Otero County Sheriff's Department reports as of 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, "Anthony Burquez in Custody. Thank you to Pueblo County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team for their assistance."
Sheriff Shawn Mobley said , "Thank you for your patience today as the Otero County Sheriff's Office, Pueblo County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team, and La Junta Police Department conducted an operation in the area of 5th Street and Smithland Avenue for a fugitive identified as Anthony Burquez, wanted on 7 outstanding warrants including Distribution of Controlled Substances, Possession of a Weapon by Previous Offender, Vehiclular Eluding, and several more. He was taken into custody without incident, surrendering to the SWAT Team, after hours of trying to get him to come out on his own."
La Junta Intermediate School had gone into a Shelter in Place status and no one was allowed to leave or enter the building during that time.
The Otero County Sheriff’s Office is working on arresting a fugitive identified as Anthony Burquez in the area of Fifth Street and Smithland Avenue in La Junta. He is wanted on seven outstanding warrants. OCSO and La Junta PD personnel have closed off the roadways, and they are asking people to avoid the area if at all possible. They are awaiting arrival of Pueblo County SWAT team and their negotiators in hopes of taking Burquez into custody without incident. He is currently wanted for four felony warrants for distribution of controlled substances, vehicular eluding, possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and three outstanding misdemeanor traffic warrants.
They will reopen the streets as soon as it is safe to do so.
