FOWLER — The 2017 high school boys' golf season got under way on Friday as Fowler High School hosted its annual tournament at the Cottonwood Links.

The Grizzlies finished in second place as a team with 269, seven strokes behind tournament champion Pueblo West with 261.

Leading Fowler was Derrick Sharp, who was the medalist with a four-over-par 76. David Gage finished sixth with an 88.

Rounding out the Grizzlies were Joe Aragon with a 98, which was 17th, Christian Mullarky with a 104, which was 26th, and Hunter Mason with a 108, which was tied for 31st.

Pueblo West also had two golfers in the top six as A.J. Arguello was third with an 83 and Ryan Timme was fifth with an 85.

Monte Vista was the third-place team with 275 and the Pirates were led by Luke Hoffstetter who was fourth with an 85. Hoffstettler and Timme were tied as both shot an 85, but Hoffstettler won a scorecard playoff to secure fourth place.

Rye was fourth with 293 and Rocky Ford and Lamar tied for fifth place as both had 299.

The Meloneers' top golfer was Levi Collins with a 97, which tied him for 14th. Ethan Jacob shot a 100, which was tied for 19th, Seth Havens recorded a 102, which was tied for 21st, Christian Valdez had a 105 for 27th place, Josh Johnson fired in a 107 for 30th place, Blake Havens recorded a 116 for 39th place and Martin Fernandez shot a 121, which tied him for 37th.

Leading the Savages was Brock Reedy, who finished second with an 80.

Cheyenne Wells was seventh with 315 and Eads was eighth with 318.

La Junta sent a junior varsity squad to Fowler and it was ninth with 330. Nate Copley led the Tigers with a 118, which was tied for 31st, Nate Paolucci had a 119, which was 36th, Trey Pearce scored a 123, which tied him for 40th, and Jacob Martinez had a 132, which was 44th.

Rounding out the team scoring was Pueblo County in 10th place with 390. La Veta did not record a team score.

The next action for Fowler is the La Junta Invitational on Friday and the next for Rocky Ford is the Alamosa Invitational on Friday. La Junta will have its first varsity meet at Trinidad on Wednesday and it will host its annual tournament on Friday.

No golf for Swink this year

Swink High School will not field a boys' golf team this year due to a lack of a coach. Lion golfers will play for either La Junta or Rocky Ford this year.
