Last Friday, the Fowler Grizzlies football team played their final regular season game against the Kiowa Indians on the Indians' home turf. The Grizzlies continued the dominance they displayed throughout the regular season with a 52-12 win.
In the first quarter, senior Brand Sharp started Fowler off with his first touchdown of the evening. Sharp then finished off the drive with a 2-point conversion. The next Grizzlies possession Sharp picked up right where he left off with another touchdown to put Fowler up 14-0 to end the first period.
The second quarter began with sophomore quarterback Luke Bitter running in for his only touchdown of the game with Brand Sharp scoring the 2-point conversion. With a score of 22-0, Junior Quinton Flanscha scored his first touchdown of the night giving Fowler a 28-0 lead at the half.
The Grizzlies came out the second half with more fire than before, evident by Flanscha’s touchdown run on the first play of the half. Senior Chantz Lange caught a pass from Flanscha on the 2-point attempt and extended the lead to 36-0. Lange’s night wasn’t done however, as he caught a touchdown pass from Flanscha toward the end of the third period. Sharp then ran for the 2-point conversion to put the Grizzlies up 44-0 to end the third quarter.
Being the last regular season game of the season, the Grizzlies decided to have some fun and reward their senior offensive linemen with handoffs near the goal line. Senior Tyson Martinez scored Fowler’s final touchdown of the regular season, while senior Titus Unruh finished the Grizzlies' scoring with the 2-point conversion.
The Grizzlies start the playoffs in Springfield on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. Fowler earned the ninth overall seed in the Class 1A State Tournament bracket and will travel to eighth ranked Springfield. Springfield was crowned the regular season Southeast League despite their 6-3 overall record courtesy of their league clinching a win over Holly (7-1) Oct. 10 in overtime 32-26.
Fowler enters post season play 8-1 overall. The winner of Saturday's game will play the winner of top ranked Sedgewick County and 16th seed McClave in the quarterfinal round next Saturday.
