The winter high school sports season is just getting started and all of the local teams will be in action spanning the next seven days.
La Junta basketball
Both of the La Junta High School basketball teams will be at the 82nd Annual Trinidad State Invitational, which begins today.
Today, both the Tigers and Lady Tigers will play Hoehne. The girls' team will play at 4:30 p.m. and the boys will play at 6 p.m.
La Junta's teams will play either Primero or Raton (N.M.) in the second round on Friday. On Saturday, the Lady Tigers will play either Springer (N.M.), Custer County, John Mall or Trinidad and the Tigers will face either Manitou Springs, Custer County, John Mall or Trinidad on Saturday.
Swink High School's basketball teams begin their season by hosting Florence on Saturday. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
The Cheraw High School basketball teams open their seasons today by competing at the Sangre de Cristo Thunderbird Shootut in Mosca.
Today, both teams will play Dolores. The Lady Wolverines play at 2:40 p.m. and the Wolverines play at 4:20 p.m.
In the second round, both Cheraw teams will play either Sierra Grande or Antonito on Friday. In the third round, the teams will play either Sangre de Cristo, Ouray, Creede or Centennial (San Luis) on Saturday.
Rocky Ford basketball
The Rocky Ford High School basketball teams will begin their season by playing Crowley County in Ordway on Saturday. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
The Fowler High School basketball teams' season begins on Friday as they will travel to Colorado Springs to take on Evangelical Christian Academy. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m.
The Manzanola High School basketball teams open their season today as it hosts the Rocky Ford junior varsity teams. The first game begins at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats travel to Granada. Basketball action gets underway at 5 p.m.
Las Animas basketball
The Las Animas High School basketball teams will participate in the Mountain Top Tournament, which will begin today at Centauri High School in La Jara.
The Trojans and Lady Trojans will both play Del Norte today. The boys' team will play at 4:30 p.m. and the girsl will play at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, Las Animas will play either Basalt or Salida. On Saturday, it will play either Centauri, Sargent, Olathe or Center.
The McClave High School basketball teams will start their season on Saturday at they will play at Holly. The first game begins at 4 p.m.
On Tuesday, the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals will begin the Border War Tournament in Syracuse, Kansas. Both teams will play Elkhart (Kan.) with the girls playing at 1:30 p.m. and the boys at 3 p.m.
The remainder of the tournament will be played on Dec. 8-9.
Crowley County basketball
The Crowley County High School basketball teams opened the 2017-18 winter sports season Wednesday as they traveled to Florence. The boys' team won 50-17 with Chris Meyer scoring 10 points and Bradley Clabey and Lane Walter both scored nine. The girls lost 54-24.
The Chargers and Lady Chargers will host Calhan Friday beginning at 5 p.m. On Saturday, they will host Rocky Ford beginning at 2 p.m.
The Kim/Branson co-op basketball teams will open the season today at the R.L. Ballard Tournament in Springfield.
Today, the Lady Mustangs will play Cheyenne Wells at 3 p.m. and the Mustangs will play Springfield at 6:45 p.m. On Friday, the girls will play either Springfield or South Baca and the boys will face either Cheyenne Wells or South Baca.
The high school wrestling season begins today as Rocky Ford High School will host a dual meet against Lamar. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
The first tournaments of the season are on Saturday. Fowler will host the Grizzly Invitational, which will begin at 9 a.m. Also in this tournament are County Line (a co-op with McClave and Wiley), Crowley County, Las Animas and Swink.
Rocky Ford will host a dual meet tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Melondome.
Las Animas will host a double dual Tuesday against County Line and the Lamar JV team. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
The La Junta wrestling team's season begins on Wednesday as it will host a dual meet against Pueblo East. The first match begins at 6 p.m.
Arkansas Valley girls' swimming
The Arkansas Valley girls' swimming and diving team will open its season today as it will have a dual meet against St. Mary's. The meet will take place at Mitchell High School's pool in Colorado Springs and the first event begins at 4 p.m.
The Lady Tigers will team will be at a dual meet Fountain Valley on Tuesday. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
