The Otero Junior College basketball program will once again host its three annual camps. On June 1-2, it will host the boys' team camp; on June 5-7 it will host the kids camp, and on June 8-9, it will host the girls' team camp. Details for each camp can be found on the OJC athletics web site at https://www.ojc.edu/athletics/athleticcamps.aspx. The games played at the team camps are open to the public. Camp director Taylor Shaffer encourages everyone to come watch the teams compete and grow during the camps.
The boys' team camp is scheduled for June 1-2. The camp will take place at OJC's McDivitt Center Gym and the La Junta High School Gym. The camp is anticipated to run from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. The games will be officiated by current/former OJC basketball players and former high school players from the area, Teams from southeast Colorado, Nebraska and Denver will be in attendance. Registration for the boys' camp has closed.
The kids' camp is open to ages 6-16. The camp will run from June 5-7 from 8-11:45 a.m. all three days. Register by contacting Shaffer at (719) 384-6828 from 7:30-8 a.m. in OJC's McDivitt Center Gym on June 5. According to Shaffer, during this time participants will receive instructions from college coaches and basketball players on the fundamentals of the game, participate in daily competitions and get the opportunity to hear exciting lectures from coaches and college athletes. The three-day camp costs $90. Each camper will receive a camp shirt and basketball. Each camper is asked to provide their own gym shoes, t-shirt and gym shorts. The concession stand will be open during the camp.
The girls' team camp is scheduled for June 8-9 and it will take place in the McDivitt Center Gym and the La Junta High School Gym. The camp is anticipated to run from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on June 8 and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 9. The games will be officiated by current/former OJC basketball players and former high school players from the area. This is a high school camp containing varsity and junior varsity teams. In previous years, teams from southeast Colorado, Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Denver have participated. Teams interested in participating need to mail the checks and release forms to Taylor Shaffer by June 4.
