CASPER, Wyo. — Otero Junior College's Mason Mardesich hit a rough spot on his second ride at the College National Finals Rodeo in the Monday morning slack Monday at the Casper Events Center.
Mardesich recorded a no score after being thrown off of his ride and he slipped to ninth place in saddle bronc riding as of Monday. The rest of the second go-round will take place in Tuesday's slack, and the third go will begin with the Tuesday evening performance.
He had a score of 76 1/2 points in his first ride on Sunday.
Gillette (Wyoming) College's Carter Elshere took the lead as he moved from third to first with a 76 1/2-point ride. His two-ride score is 154.
Dawson Dahm of Oklahoma Panhandle State dropped from a tie for first into second with a 74-point run for a total of 152.
Jake Clark of Trinity Valley (Texas) had the best score on Monday Morning with 77 points. Elshere was next with 76 1/2 and Dahm was third with 74.
Only 10 riders were successful in the Monday slack.
Mardesich's third and final ride will take place in the Wednesday evening performance.
Kelly Valdez a last-minute entry
Former Swink High School student Kelly Valdez found out recently that she was entered into the CNFR in breakaway roping.
She had her first run in the Sunday matinee, however, she did not record a time.
Valdez, who attends Weatherford College in Texas, finished fourth in breakaway roping in the Southwest Region. However, she was entered into the CNFR after Madison Milligan of Cisco (Texas) Junior College suffered an injury.
Valdez had her second attempt in the Tuesday morning slack.
