HURON, S.D. — The 2018 National Junior Finals Rodeo came to a conclusion this past Saturday at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds.

Waitley Sharon of Ordway had his final attempt in boys' goat tying on Friday evening. He had a time of 11.02 seconds, which was a 1.93-second improvement over his first attempt, and he finished in ninth place in the performance.

Sharon finished 40th overall with a total combined time of 23.97 seconds. He was 33rd in the second go-round.

He also competed in saddle bronc steer riding at the NJHSFR, but was unsuccessful on both of his rides.

The final overall boys' winners were Kade Madsen of Honeyville, Utah, in bareback steer riding with 188 total points; Stone Reeves of Magnolia, Mississippi, in breakaway roping in 9.12 seconds; Riley Webb of Denton, Texas, in goat tying in 27.32 seconds; Canyon Bass of Wimberly, Texas, in bull riding with 219 points; Brady Barringer of Winterset, Iowa, in chute dogging in 7.7 seconds, Gus Gaillard of Morse, Texas, in saddle bronc steer riding with 187 points; and Cauy Masters of Leon, Iowa, in tie-down roping in 34.69 seconds.

The girls' champions included Karsyn Daniels of McKinney, Texas, in barrel racing in 47.319 seconds; Josie Connor of Iowa, Louisiana in breakaway roping in 8.27 seconds; Logan Wilson of Louin, Mississippi, in goat tying in 23.17 seconds; and Jaylee Young of Hugo, Oklahoma, in pole bending in 60.498 seconds.

The team roping champions were Denim Ross of Botha, Alberta, Canada, and Levi Schmidt of Barrhead, Alberta, Canada, in 24.35 seconds. The ribbon roping champions were Luke and Grace Dubois, both of Church Point, Louisiana, in 25.5 seconds.

Gaillard was the All-Around Cowboy, and Young was both the All-Around Cowgirl and All-Around Rookie Cowgirl. Coy Montgomery or Esparto, California, was the All-Around Rookie Cowboy.

The top 20 performers after the two go-rounds returned for the championship round on Saturday evening.

Four locals to appear at National High School Finals Rodeo

The National High School Finals rodeo will take place July 15-21 in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Four locals will be at the NHSFR. Kodey Hoss of La Junta will compete in breakaway roping and goat tying, Jacobi Larsen of Fowler will be in pole bending, Colt Honey of La Junta will be in steer wrestling, and Dalley Gibson of La Junta will be in the rifle shoot.
