The woes for the La Junta High School softball team continued on Thursday as the Lady Tigers lost to Rocky Ford 12-0 Thursday at Tippy Martinez Park.

Leading to the Lady Tigers' troubles were six errors, plus the pitching of Lady Meloneer Sadie Brewer.

"Sadie pitched well," said LJ coach Roger Davis. "The big thing for us is you can't have errors. We had way too many errors early in the game. When you start doing that, it's not the same. It's not the same for the pitcher. It's not the same on any play in that game. We catch the ball down the first base line, then there's no runs in that inning. Simple things like that. We just have to eliminate them."

"Sadie had a really great week," said Rocky coach J.C. Carrica. "She was really looking forward to throwing this game. She came out with a lot of energy and she hit her spots. Offensively, we put the ball in play and in several cases, La Junta just didn't make the plays defensively."

The Lady Meloneers started scoring early as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Brewer singled, Kelly Long was hit by a pitch and Baylie Kruger was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Niquole Knapp drew a walk to drive home Daisy Medina, who was courtesy-running for Brewer, and Ciarra Huckaby doubled home Long and Kruger. Lexie Fernandez also reached on a fielder's choice as Knapp scored on the play.

Rocky put five more runs on the board in the second. Chantae Rodriguez was safe on an error in the outfield and Brewer received a base on balls. Long was safe on an error to drive home Rodriguez, Kruger reached on another error to plate Medina, and Knapp's single drove home Long and Kruger. Huckaby got on base on another error and Fernandez's singe scored Knapp for a 9-0 Lady Meloneers' lead.

Rocky added another run in the fourth. Fernandez walked and Ally Bartholomew's single drove home Alisha Jaramillo, who was pinch-running for Fernandez.

The Lady Meloneers wrapped up the scoring with two runs in the fifth. Knapp and Huckaby were safe on a fielder's choice and Fernandez drew a walk to load the bases. Bartholomew was hit by a pitch to score Knapp, and Rodriguez was safe on an error to plate Fernandez.

The game ended on the 10-run rule.

Brewer went the distance as the Lady Meloneers' pitcher and she allowed no runs and three hits. She had four strikeouts and no walks.

Robyn Wallace was La Junta's starting pitcher and she took the loss. She gave up 10 runs and six hits and she struck out one, walked six and hit two batters. Alianna Salazar finished the game and she allowed two runs and no hits and she had one strikeout, one walk and two hit batters.

Rocky had six hits with Huckaby hitting a double and Brewer, Knapp, Fernandez, Rodriguez and Bartholomew each collecting a single.

The Lady Tigers' hits consisted of a single by Lexi Nunez, a double by Jade Smith and a triple by Sara Noll.

La Junta (4-11, 0-1 Tri-Peaks League) will go back on the road on Saturday as it will travel to Colorado Springs to face Discovery Canyon.

"They don't have the big pitcher they had last year, but they're still a good ball club," Davis said. "They play a lot of tough teams and they have a very good coach. They do things right."

Rocky Ford (8-5, 1-0) will play Dolores Huerta in Pueblo on Tuesday.
