ROCKY FORD — The eighth-ranked Rocky Ford High School softball team defeated La Junta 12-2 Saturday at Babcock Park.
The Lady Meloneers started the day by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added four more in the bottom of the second to increase the lead to 8-0.
The Lady Tigers scored their only runs in the top of the third.
Rocky Ford answered by scoring three in the bottom of the third. The highlights were a solo home run by Ally Bartholomew and a two-run shot by Baylie Kruger.
The Lady Meloneers scored once in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Abby McElroy went the distance for Rocky and she earned the win. She allowed two runs and four hits and she also had six strikeouts and two walks.
Robyn Wallace also went the distance for La Junta and she was the losing pitcher. She gave up 12 runs and 14 hits with one strikeout and six walks.
Leading the Rocky Ford offense was Kruger, who went 4-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. Kelly Long wnet 3-4 with a double and one RBI, Sadie Brewer went 2-3 with one RBI, Ciarra Huckaby went 2-3 and Bartholomew went 2-4 with a double, a home run and one RBI.
La Junta's hits were singles by Nevaeh Fisher, Cheyenne Norton, Azalea Gamez and Jade Smith.
Rocky Ford (13-6, 5-1 Tri-Peaks League) will wrap up league play on Tuesday as it will travel to Colorado Springs to face James Irwin. It will conclude the regular season with a nonleague home game against Pueblo Centennial on Wednesday and at road nonleague game at Lamar on Friday.
La Junta (7-14, 3-2) will play a pair of home league games this week. It will host Florence on Tuesday and St. Mary's on Thursday.
