Poor weather may affect the start of softball's postseason this weekend.

The regionals in three classifications — classes 5A, 4A and 3A — have a start date of Saturday. Initially, it was hoped to be able to play some of the regions on Friday, pending the availability of umpires. However poor field conditions, combined with a lack of available umpires on a weekday, have made it so that no regionals will be able to be played on Friday, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bud Ozzello, who administers softball.

As a result, all softball regionals will be scheduled to begin play on Saturday.

Additionally, the weather forecast on Saturday is calling for moisture in the late afternoon for the metro Denver area, and the northern part of the state. That may affect the completion of some regionals.

If games are unable to be completed, Sunday would be the next available date for completion. However, Sunday may also have weather problems with snow in the forecast for the metro, northern and southern parts of the state.

In that event, any remaining games would be completed on Monday.

The state tournament seeding meeting, scheduled for Monday, will still be held at the CHSAA office as scheduled, or pending the conclusion of all regional tournaments.

Should any further updates be needed, either on the date of regional play, or the timing of the seeding meeting, they will be communicated to participating schools via email, and on CHSAANow.com.
