The Fowler Police Department proudly displays its complete fleet of five vehicles, 4 Ford Crown Victorias and, the newest addition, a 2002 GMC Yukon.
The Yukon was purchased from the City of La Junta, already equipped to use as a police vehicle, for $1000. According to Fowler Chief of Police Henry Borrego, the Yukon runs on E85 fuel and has been achieving gas mileage very similar to the cars. It is a 4-wheel drive which will be especially useful under inclement weather and road conditions. Borrego also appreciates the higher vantage point in the SUV saying it allows for a better view into passing vehicles. Until the other officers on the Fowler force complete the SUV training course, Borrego is the only one qualified to drive the Yukon.
The Yukon, along with three of the cars, sport the new Fowler Police Department’s black and white design. The fourth car will remain unmarked.
Fowler Town Administrator, Wayne Snider, says he is anxious to study the fuel mileage and performance of the Yukon using E85. If it proves to be economical without sacrificing performance the city may consider converting the Crown Victorias at a future time.
