Twenty years after being mobilized from Fort Carson to Saudia Arabia to serve in the Desert Shield operation which later turned into Desert Storm, members of the Army National Guard’s 947 Medical Company CLR (clearing) plan to reunite.
The company is mainly from the Arkansas Valley, though not able to be at 100 percent, several members joined the company from Utah and Wyoming.
The 28-hour flight departed on Nov. 27, 1990 with 139 enlisted men and 14 officers. Eighteen females, one who was a doctor, completed the company.
After being mobilized for almost seven months, the company returned in May 1991. During that time they made some lifetime loyalties.
The company wants to let members of the 947 know about the get-together. It will be a get-together for the 20- year reunion of the activation of the unit for Desert Storm. All soldiers that were in the 947th Medical Unit and their guests are invited to the Las Animas Community Center (the old armory where they met all those years ago) on Sunday, Nov. 21, from 1000 to 1200 hours.
One thing that makes this bunch so great is that when they were preparing to leave, anyone with 20 years experience was given the option to stay, but they’d trained for this for so long and decided to go and serve their country with the skills they’d been practicing.
Questions can be directed to 1st Sgt. Dennis Marquez at (719) 469-2622.
