Last week, the Fowler Police Department was the recipient of cash donations from the Rocky Ford Elks Lodge and the Fowler Fire Department.
Elks Lodge Secretary George Hanzas was one of the members who helped organize a Pre-Decorated Christmas Tree Auction that was held on Nov. 19.
Tables of eight were purchased for $150, which included a prime rib dinner. Twenty-one pre-decorated Christmas trees were auctioned off raising nearly $5,000 for the organization.
“We really hadn’t anticipated raising this much money, but are glad we did,” said Hanzas.
Bill Maier from Maier’s Auction Barn was instrumental in this fundraiser with his expertise in auctioneering.
“Our service area includes Crowley County, Manzanola, Rocky Ford and Fowler. I was glad to hear about the Fowler Police Department Toy/Food Drive and we are happy to present them with a check for $1,000,” said Hanzas.
Present to receive the award from the Elks Lodge members were Interim Police Chief Tommie McLallen, Officer Shannon Saunders and Mayor Pat Christensen.
“We are so thankful for this donation, it couldn’t have come at a better time,” said McLallen.
Guests were treated to a cheeseburger dinner provided by the Elk’s Lodge.
Also receiving checks were the Rocky Ford Food Bank-$2,000; Crowley County Council of Churches- $1,000; Manzanola High School Clause for a Cause- $1,000.
Later that night the Fowler Fire Department presented a check in the amount of $500 to the Fowler Police Department in support of their Toy/Food Drive.
“The monies received will be used for purchasing food and toys for needy families within our community and will provide a nice Christmas for several families, we appreciate the help from our community” McLallen said.
