In 2003, the late Dr. Larry Vibber saw the potential of having a high school golf team. Vibber coached the team until 2005, when he turned it over to Mark Sharp.
Sharp, along with his assistant coach Kevin Hagerman, have made great strides with the golf program at Fowler High School.
For the first time in its history, Fowler High School golf team will send two golfers to participate in the state tournament which will be held in Gunnison.
Adrian Larson (who is a foreign exchange student) and Brandon Grasmick will represent Fowler High School on Oct. 3 and 4 when they travel to play at Dos Rios Golf Club.
“My entire team did a great job this season. Dean Klinkerman and Kyle McFarland had a great season,” said coach Sharp about the two who qualified for state, as well as other team members.
“In state competition they place the top 10, so Adrian and Brandon will need to play some really good golf. The course is tough, with a lot of water,” Sharp said.
A total of 84 teams will be competing and among those teams are schools from Vail, Rifle, Manitou Springs, Swink, Rye, John Mall and Delores Huerta, to name a few.
“Coming from a small school it’s an honor just to qualify. Last year we came really close to qualifying a couple golfers. I had a really good feeling about this year,” Sharp said.
Starting a new tradition for Fowler High School athletics is something Sharp would love to see.
“I have some good golfers coming up. Now we’ve made it over the hurdle of regionals we can start building a new tradition for Fowler,” Sharp said.
