Thankfully, the price of gasoline is down. Does that mean we should drive off to distant places for holiday shopping and fun?

Here are some ideas for local shopping: You can procure fruit baskets and other perishable food in attractive packaging, right here. You can buy canned and packaged food too; make a colorful bag (local thrift stores have fabric) and fill it with a variety of edibles. Then the bag can be used in place of plastic bags.

Local stores offer craft materials, school supplies, cosmetics, household essentials, toys, gift wrap, knick knacks and dozens of other options. Buy an interesting container and fill it with homemade goodies for something personalized.
Many small towns have no place to buy new clothes. We do, and we should take advangate of this.

Thrift stores in cities have seen much-increased sales in the ongoing economic scenario. Our local places for passed on items can be just as useful and utilized. Buy jeans (the selection, from Levi's to Lucky's and Lees is amazing) and add decor; buy shirts, hats, coats and more; books, DVD's and games are at a nearby store. Purchase a nostalgic desk to encourage student excellence, or get an antique and have the whole family contrive a funny story to go with it.
Get tools, car care stuff, home products and other nifty necessaries at local hardware place. Or treat someone on your list to a carpet replacement. You might even post an ad in the local paper for some desired electronic gizmo and find it down the street.

Don't forget the great eateries in town. Treat family and/or friends to tasty entrees and save travel fuel. There are also places to acquire new shiny coins and the convenience stores have quick treats. Socials provided by Fowler churches offer choice opportunities too. No doubt I have failed to mention other possibilities. Someone else can add to this list. Happy Holidays!
