Dear Editor,
Congress enacted a law to assure that all money collected for Social Security would be deposited into the U.S. Treasury. However, once these funds were in the treasury, congress could steal the money whenever the need arose. For instance, the $8.5 billon to pay for the war in Bosnia was taken out of the Social Security Trust Fund. Was anyone indicted for theft and misuse of funds? No, they weren't!!
While congress continues to build hippie museums, and rain forest in Iowa, it has raided the American people's Social Security Trust Fund. Since the time of President Lyndon Johnson more than $2 trillion has been spent on things other than Social Security. This year alone nearly $200 billion will be "borrowed" from workers' Social Security taxes. Lawmakers that are serious about addressing America's impending Social Security crisis and paving the way for a better retirement security system should support "STOP THE RAID." Congress needs to choose between their own pork-barrel projects or retirement security for hard-working Americans.
From correspondence I have received it appears there is no money in the Trust Fund, just IOU's, paper that is not good for anything. The Trust Fund is never going to be paid back from all of the reckless spending. We all need to write letters to Senators Wayne Allard and Ken Salazar, both of whom are heading the campaign.
Sincerely,
Olive M. Rogge
