This letter is in reference to the controlled burn conducted on April 29th with the 2 “TRAILERS”. As many of you know, Mother Nature dictates when to burn with wind speed and direction. On the night in question, the conditions could not have been better to conduct fire training for a group of volunteer firefighters.
Due to the county wide burn ban, I contacted Sheriff Chris Johnson (at around 6:00pm) and requested permission to burn 2 piles of junk (referring to the trailers), had I advised the Sheriff that they were structures or Trailers he would have informed me of the need to obtain a State permit, I was not aware of the guidelines set forth by the state of Colorado. Further more the Fowler Tribune stated that this was conducted along with the Otero County Health Department. At no time did I speak with or did any fire member state that we had talked with the Health Department. A concerned citizen placed the call to the Health department to complain about the burn.
I accept full responsibility for my actions and apologize for my lack of knowledge concerning state guidelines. Thank you for continuing to support the local volunteer fire department they are a great group of people.
At this time I respectfully resign my position as Assistant Fire Chief from the Fowler Volunteer Fire Department.
Sincerely
Jack Hobby
