With spring break over, the Fowler Grizzly baseball team has been active. On Tuesday they hosted the Santa Fe League leading Las Animas Trojans and lost 15-5 in seven innings. They again played host on Saturday as the John Mall Panthers came to town for a double header. Fowler swept the Panthers 3-2 and 18-5.
Fowler got off to a great start by taking a 3-0 lead over the Trojans at the conclusion of two innings. The Trojans responded with five runs in the top of the third. Fowler added one in its half of the inning to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the Trojans.
Las Animas collected three more runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 8-4. Fowler held the Trojans scoreless in the fifth but Las Animas’ bats got in the top of the sixth as they scored five runs. Las Animas added two more runs in the seventh for a final score of 15-5 and a win over the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies rebounded with two games Saturday against John Mall. In the opening game, both teams played tight defense and had strong pitching performances from their starters. The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth when Fowler’s Cody Cesar and Brandon Padilla scored to put the Grizzlies up 2-0. In the top of the seventh, John Mall scored two runs to tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the inning with two Grizzly runners on base, Kyle McFarland hit a game winning RBI single for the 3-2 victory.

The night cap was a high scoring affair, the score was 5-5 after two innings played. Fowler broke the game open in the fourth scoring 13 runs in the inning taking an 18-5 lead. Scoring in that big fourth inning were Kyle McFarland (twice), Jake Milberger, AJ Hobby (twice), Cody Cesar (twice), Brandon Padilla (twice), Ryan Ververs (twice), Taylor Schiffer and James Munger. John Mall was unable to score in the top of the fifth which ended the game because of the 10-run rule.

Track battles wind at La Junta Open
It was quite a day for the inaugural track meet at the new, state-of-art Tiger Stadium athletic facility on Thursday. The temps were bearable but the winds were horrendous for kids who ran head on into the northeast winds, they seemed to almost come to a halt.
The Grizzly girls had a good showing with some great finishes. As a team, they placed second with 98 points behind the first place La Junta Tigers who had 100.
The 4 x 800 relay team of Karlee Wager, Brooke Grissom, Jessica Larson and Chelsey Wager placed first with a time of 11:22.2. The 4 x 100 relay team of Wager, Larson, Ashleigh Fox and April Gonzales placed first with a time of 55.69. The 4 x 200 relay placed third with a time of 2:03.12, the 4 x 400 relay team placed seventh with a time of 6:07.90 and the 800 medley team placed ninth with a time of 2:16.99.
Gonzales placed first in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 13.6 and the 200 meter dash, with a time of 29.72. She also finished third in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 1:05.16.
Wager finished first in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:46.65. Grissom finished first in the 3200 meter run and third in the 1600 meter run. Fox placed third in the 100 meter hurdles and Jenna Hardey placed seventh. Karlee Wager also finished third in the 300 meter hurdles.
The Grizzly boys placed ninth with 33 points. Rocky Ford placed first with 106. The boys ran hard and came up with some great finishes.
The 4 x 800 relay team of Tye Stephens, Brandon Grasmick, Marcus Trujillo and Nathan Acosta placed sixth with a time of 10:17.73. The 4 x 100 relay finished fifth with a time of 50.56 and the 4 x 400 finished eighth with a time of 4:47.56,
Dakota finished first in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 12.06 and third in 200 meter dash, with a time 28.87. He also placed fourth in the triple jump.
Skylar Laver placed fourth in the 400 meter dash. Tye Stephens placed seventh in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:16.97. Grasmick placed 10th in the 110 meter with a time of 24.27.
The Grizzlies be in action Friday and Saturday when they compete at the Pueblo Challenge Cup at Dutch Clark Stadium.
