The Colorado Bureau of Investigations has launched an internal affairs investigation into the Crowley County Sheriff’s Department.
According to Matt Heimerich, Crowley County Commissioner, the Crowley County Sheriff’s Department formally requested assistance from CBI on Sept. 18 following allegations made by a current sheriff’s department employee.
A representative at CBI was unable to comment as to who, specifically is being investigated or what the circumstances are. A report will be made available upon completion of the investigation. It is uncertain how long the investigation will take. CBI is responsible for investigations involving criminal activity and is not involved with civil affairs.
The allegations made by the employee, who has since been placed on administrative leave, include criminal activity within the department, harassment and failure to investigate and take corrective action regarding the alleged events. He has been placed on administrative leave, according to Heimrich, “for the health, safety and well being of the employee and his family.”
The employee claims since becoming a “whistleblower” he and his family have been subjected to harassment from co-workers.
According to the Crowley County Web site, the Crowley County Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the county, responsible for maintaining the peace and enforcing state criminal laws.
None of the towns located within Crowley County maintain a police force so the sheriff also assumes the duties of a municipal police department.
Currently there are five deputies serving under the leadership of Sheriff Miles Clark. Clark was appointed to finish the term of Sheriff Jeff Keyes in 2005. Keyes was recalled by voters in July of 2005 following his arrest on felony charges of which he was later found not guilty.
Heimerich assures the public normal duties of the sheriff’s department are being carried out and there are patrol deputies in the field.
