Penny Grasmick never thought filling up her gas tank would be so risky. On Wednesday afternoon, she went into the Western Convenience store to pre-pay for her gasoline.
While at the pumps she was approached by a man who asked her for a ride to Pueblo. Grasmick told him she was not going to Pueblo and couldn’t help him.
As she was facing the gas pumps, she heard her car door open and witnessed him getting into her car. After asking him what he was doing, he told her he was taking her car. At that point Grasmick grabbed his arm and pulled him out of her car. He then attempted to take her checkbook; Grasmick grabbed him by both arms and told him to leave. A store employee called 911.
The man got into his truck, driving east; he attempted to turn on Main Street and ran into the front of the Fowler State Bank. He then left the scene heading west.
Damage to the building was extensive. Jonathan Fox, chairman of the board of Fowler State Bank said, “I’m so very thankful no one was hurt. The building can be fixed.”
Although shaken after the ordeal, Penny Grasmick attributed her defensive skills to training conducted through the school several years ago.
“God must have been with me,” she said.
No report was available from the Fowler Police Department at press time.
