LA JUNTA — There is still time to register for the STEM in Real Life camp, a summer youth camp that will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, to be held at Otero Junior College on Thursday, June 23.
STEM in Real Life is planned for June 23, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. This camp is for boys and girls in 6th, 7th, 8th grades. Participants will meet in the OJC Student Center on June 23 to begin their day of finding out how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are used in real life.
Warren McClure, science faculty at OJC is leading the camp. McClure said that it will be an opportunity for middle school students to engage in some fun, hands-on activities.
“If you are a middle school student and you like to build things and work with your hands, if you like to find out how things work, if you like solving problems and thinking through challenges or if you like playing with gadgets, devices, and cool toys, then this camp is definitely for you,” said McClure.
Students can choose activities to create their schedule based on what interests them. Students can participate in workshops such as:
Rocketry, Lego Robots, Kitchen Chemistry, Bio-Tech, Computer Game Design and Crime Scene Investigation.
There are a few spaces still available for the camp. To register for the camp, students in 6th, 7th, 8th grades can come to the OJC Student Center by 8 a.m. on June 23.
Cost is $50; however, there are $40 scholarships available with application to help reduce the cost. The registration fee includes workshops, snacks, supplies and lunch.
