Last week to register for classes at OJC. Fall Semester begins Aug. 22

It may still feel like summer, but the calendar says that fall is here as Otero Junior College is ready to welcome students back to campus for the beginning of a new academic year. In less than a week, on Aug. 22, OJC will start Fall Semester.

According to Jeff Paolucci, vice president of Student Services, there is still time to enroll. “We are coming down to the wire, but there is still room in most of our academic courses and technical education programs for new students,” said Paolucci. “We are a one-stop-shop in Student Services, so if students come in this week, we will personally help them enroll in the college, chart out a course of study, get registered, and start the financial aid process,” he said. “If students have already registered for classes and need to make schedule changes; we can help them with that also.”

Students who are enrolled, or plan to enroll, in any of the OJC Hybrid courses should plan to be present at the first class meeting. The first class serves as the course orientation as well as an opportunity for the students and instructors to meet face-to-face and have their questions answered about the Learning Management System that will be used to deliver a portion of the course materials and provide communication.

Registration for Fall Semester will continue through the first week of classes; the week of Aug. 22. The Student Services Center is open this week, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Student Services Center will also be open to assist students on Saturday, Aug. 20 from noon to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 21, from noon to 4 p.m.

The OJC Bookstore will be open Monday through Friday of this week, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Center. To accommodate new students coming to campus over the weekend, the Bookstore will be open on Saturday, Aug. 20, from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday, August 21 from noon to 4 p.m.

Students will begin moving into the dormitories on Aug. 20 and 21. OJC students and their immediate family are invited to a sub sandwich lunch at the Rattlers Den Food Court on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Many of the La Junta Chamber of Commerce merchants will have booths setup for students to see what businesses and services are available to them in the area.

Opening week activities for students will kick off Monday, Aug. 22, with disk golf from 1 to 6 p.m. Students will also get a chance to exhibit their skills in several other competitions including: pool and ping pong tournaments, Wii Homerun Derby contest and Wii Basketball contest.

Other activities for the week include bowling night at Eagle Lanes on Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 9:30 p.m.-midnight. Students with current OJC IDs will receive unlimited bowling, shoes and the use of a ball for free. There will also be drawings throughout the evening for gifts.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, OJC Students are invited to a special showing of the current movie at the Fox Theatre at 9:30 p.m. Students with current OJC IDs will be admitted free and a concession special of $1 for a small pop or popcorn will be available for students to purchase.
