Here are five ways to have fun this weekend.

1. The first weekend in December is a great time to get started decorating your home for the holidays. Need some fresh ideas? Check out Pinterest’s holiday decorating boards for inspiration.

2. Too cold outside? Head to the movies to see “Christmas Eve.” In this family comedy produced by Larry King, a power outage traps six groups of New Yorkers in elevators on Christmas Eve where they find that laughter, romance and a little bit of faith will get them through - and change their lives in unexpected ways.

3. The first week in December is Cookie Cutter Week so pour yourself a big glass of milk and whip up a batch of sugar cookies to cut and decorate. For easy sweet treat recipes, check out Louise Davidson’s new “Holiday Baking” cook book.

4. Dec. 4 is World Wildlife Conservation Day, a day intended to raise awareness of wild species, which are facing threats including unsustainable trade, loss of habitat, climate change, and disease. Visit worldwildlife.org and take the Wildlife Conservation Day Pledge and help spread the word.

5. Start a new tradition in your family. Put out your shoes or hang up a stocking and celebrate St. Nicholas Day on Dec. 6. On this traditional Northern European holiday, good children receive small gifts like candy and cookies while naughty children receive lumps of coal.
