It didn't take long for the area's first baby of 2016 to arrive.
At 10:47 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2016, Andres Ian Saenz was born at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta. Little Andres weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 19 1/2 inches long.
Parents, Kendra Marquez and Nesto Saenz of Rocky Ford, were both shocked and excited that their son was the first born in 2016.
Kendra's due date was Jan. 8. On Dec. 31, she had a doctor's appointment and the doctor had planned to have her admitted on Jan. 2 to be induced.
"A lot of my friends were messaging us telling us that we were going to have him on New Year's," Kendra said. "I kept telling them no, we are going in on Jan. 2."
But, baby Andres had other plans. Around 4 a.m. Kendra said she started having contractions. "I couldn't go back to bed after they started," she said.
They finally arrived at the hospital around 8 a.m. which was around the same time the Tribune-Democrat first called the hospital to find out if there were any babies born in the early morning hours. The nurse told the newspaper that she couldn't talk and to call back in a few hours - a sign that there was a baby on the way.
And a few hours was all it would take. Andres arrived 2 hours and 47 minutes after his mother was admitted to the hospital.
This was by far her fastest delivery, Kendra said. She was in labor with her son Adrian, now 7, for two days and her daughter, Alysia, now 6, for one day. Six years between her middle child and Andres, Kendra said there were many things she didn't quite remember.
"I didn't remember any of the pain," she said with a laugh.
The family - both older siblings and father Nesto (Andres is his first child) were excited beyond words as they gathered around the new baby. Nesto said big brother Adrian can't wait until he's older so he can play Xbox with him. Big sister Alysia cried when they told her that the baby was born. When she arrived at the hospital she brought a drawing she had made for her mom and baby brother.
With tears of joy in their eyes and smiles on all of their faces, the family celebrates a new year with new beginnings.
