Santa Fe Trail Day Weekend FUN

Looking for something fun to do with the entire family? Come to Las Animas for the 83rd annual Santa Fe Trail Day events and the Boggsville tractor show!

Friday, April 28, will kick off the excitement with the parade lineup at 9 a.m. west of the Las Animas High school. Parade will begin at 10 a.m. All Boggsville tractor show entries participating in the parade will be presented with a free coupon for the Ranch Burger Lunch taking place at the high school cafeteria from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the Family Fun Entertainment event (details below). Also, be on the lookout for Wheels Ablaze Muscle Car Ministries in the parade as we will be passing out coupons worth free turns at the Family Fun Entertainment event (see details below) to a few lucky attendees!

Following the parade, on the corner of 5th Street and Carson Avenue will be the much-anticipated engine blow. Donations of $1 or $5 to Wheels Ablaze Muscle Car Ministry/12th Annual Andrew Ricken Memorial Scholarship Fund buys your spot(s) on the boards and enters you to win a cash prize of up to $900! This years’ engine blow car is a 1987 Oldsmobile with a 3.8 liter generously donated by Netherton Inc. The Scholarship winner will be announced at noon on Saturday, the 29th at the Boggs House, located at Boggsville (two miles South of Las Animas on Highway 101), during the chili dinner fundraiser for the Senior Center which starts at 11 a.m. The winner will also be publicized in next week’s edition. Cost for the chili dinner is $6/plate and includes several choices of chili, cornbread, dessert and a drink.

During the parade the John W. Rawlings Heritage Center and Museum (560 Bent Avenue), will be closed to allow our volunteers to attend and participate in this great day. We will reopen promptly afterward for all those wishing to come in and view our fantastic displays as well as enjoy the 12th Annual Santa Fe Trail Day Art Show that will be taking place in the Grand Hall, located on the second floor of the building (an elevator is available). This year’s theme is “The Santa Fe Trail, The Story of a Great Highway.” We have Adult Professional, Non-professional and Student Art categories and guest judge, Mary Landis. Make your vote count on our People’s Choice entry! There will be paintings, photographs, sculptures and more for your viewing pleasure as well as refreshments following the parade 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Kick start your Saturday at the season opening of Boggsville and the Family Fun Entertainment event for a full day (12 to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday) of great food and entertainment for all ages! Vendor spots still available, please contact Missy Ricken for more information at 719-940-0096. Registration for both the antique tractor show (antique cars welcome) hosted by Wheels Ablaze Muscle Car Ministry and the Boggsville Revitalization Committee and the antique tractor pull, hosted by Jim Turner and sled provided by Arkansas Valley Flywheelers will begin at 9 a.m. Both the tractor show and pull will begin at 10 a.m. The first 50 entries in the tractor show will receive a goodie bag filled with door prizes, coupons, and treats from our sponsors. The show and pull are free to attend as well as the self-guided tours of our wonderful historic Boggsville settlement, however donations to Boggsville are accepted and greatly appreciated.

The Family Fun Entertainment event boasts a bouncy house ($2), joust house ($3), Velcro climbing wall ($3/5 climbs), miniature train rides ($3), slip and slide ($3/5 turns). Many vendors will be present selling refreshments, chair massages, jewelry, T-shirts, personalized items, rock climbing wall, face painting and much, much more! There will also be a book selling/signing by Larry Garner, author of "Ded Reckoning." Restrooms on site.
