Skinners donate to Wayne Kash Memorial Bikers Toy Run

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas for members of the Wayne Kash Memorial Bikers Toy Run and Toy Dance committee. Thursday afternoon they received a donation of 18 bicycles from Tom and Tracy Skinner of Parker.

Tom Skinner Sr. of Cheraw had been helping get bicycles for Don Burkepile of La Junta for him to refurbish for some area children. Burkepile has been refurbishing bikes for children for years and Skinner estimates Burkepile has done over 1,600 bicycles. He has, however, had some health problems and had to cut back severely the number of bikes he can do. When Burkepile reached his limit, Skinner needed another outlet for the bicycles his son Tom and daughter-in-law Tracy Skinner were collecting in Parker. Terry Spangler of La Junta suggested that the Skinner family get in touch with Jody Bracy to see if the Wayne Kash Memorial Bikers Toy Run and Toy Dance could use some bicycles. Without any hesitation, Jody said yes. Thursday afternoon, Tom and Tracy delivered 18 bicycles to La Junta for the Toy Dance. They will be delivering another 18 or so in a couple of weeks. Dustin and Natalie Faus are providing temporary storage of these bicycles until they are delivered to children this Christmas. In the meantime, Richard Devlin will be going through them and make sure that they are repaired and they will be given a safety check up.

Last year with the generous donations and hard work from the community, the Wayne Kash Memorial Bikers Toy Run and Toy Dance was able to help over 800 children in Otero, Bent and Crowley counties. All of the children that receive Christmas presents through the Toy Dance come from referrals from the Bent County Sheriff's Office, Otero County Sheriff's Office, Otero County Social Services, Crowley County Social Services, as well as Manzanola and Crowley County Schools. The Toy Dance also aids the Rocky Ford Ministerial Alliance with their Christmas program for underprivileged children.

This year the American Legion Department of Colorado has chosen the Wayne Kash Memorial Bikers Toy Run and Toy Dance as one of their Children and Youth projects. American Legion District 1 is very excited to have a Children and Youth project from the lower Arkansas Valley be chosen. This project is the legacy of Navy Master Chief Wayne Kash who served 24 years as a Navy Seal.
