Here is an update on some high school wrestling tournaments that took place over the weekend.

Mel Smith Invitational

FLORENCE — The La Junta High School wrestling team competed in the Mel Smith Invitational, which occurred last Friday and Saturday at Husky Gym.

Four Tigers placed in the meet and they were led by Isaiah Gamez, who won an individual tournament championship for the second straight week. Gamez won at 120 pounds.

Also placing for La Junta were Noah Barrett, who took fifth place 132, Wyatt Buhr, who was also fifth at 182, and Nick Martinez, who placed sixth at 285.

La Junta will be in Lamar for a dual meet on Thursday, and it will be at the Northglenn Invitational on Saturday.

Alamosa Invitational

ALAMOSA — The Rocky Ford High School wrestling team participated in the Alamosa Invitational on Saturday.

Eight Meloneers placed at least third and three of them were tournament champions. Winning titles for Rocky were Michael Maldonado (106), Diego Reyes (160), and Greg Garcia (285).

Taking second place in their weight divisions were Dillon Jaramillo (113), Santino Mendoza (126), and Carlos Romo (145). Joziah Maestas (120) and Simon Apodaca (220) both took third.

On Friday evening, the second-ranked Meloneers defeated top-ranked Cedaredge 49-24 in a dual meet that took place at Pueblo Centennial High School's gym.

Rocky Ford, along with Crowley County, Fowler, Las Animas, and Swink will all compete in the Santa Fe League Meet Thursday at Swink. The Meloneers will then go to the Top of the Rockies Invitational at Centaurus High School in Lafayette on Friday.

Pueblo Centennial Bulldog Invitational

PUEBLO — Both the Swink and Fowler high school wrestling teams took part in the Bulldog Invitational, which took place Saturday at Pueblo Centennial High School's gym.

Fowler finished in eighth place and it had four placers. Leading the Grizzlies was Dahlton McGhee, who was the champion at 195 pounds. Also placing for Fowler were Seth McFall, who was second at 106. Tyson Martinez, who was second at 182, and Chantz Lange, who was fifth at 152.

Swink placed 14th and it had two wrestlers go to the awards stand. Kaleb Fisher was fourth at 145 and Michael Romero was fifth at 106.

Fowler was also at a dual meet at Lamar on Thursday and the Grizzlies lost to the Savages 51-20.

In addition to the league meet, both teams will be in Trinidad for the Gene Gagliardi Invitational on Saturday. Crowley County and County Line will also compete in Trinidad.
