The local high school wrestling teams were in various types of action this past weekend.

Rocky Welton Invitational

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Isaiah Gamez won the 113-pound champinonship as the La Junta High School wrestling team participated in the 60th Annual Rocky Welton Invitational this past weekend at Garden City High School's gym.

Gamez defeated Pueblo East's Andres Lucero 5-4 in the championship match. He is the first La Junta wrestler to win at the Rocky Welton Invitational since Phillip Gallegos in 2008.

Also placing for the Tigers were Brandon Nelson, who was 11th at 120 pounds, Eddie Velador, who was 16th at 220, and Ryan Metzger, who was 16th at 285.

The Tigers finished in 25th place with 43 1/2 points.

Goddard (Kan.) won the tournament with 226 1/2 points, followed by Kearney (Neb.) with 221 1/2. Pueblo East placed the highest among the Colorado schools with 180 1/2 points and Pomona was fourth with 180.

Center duals

CENTER — Rocky Ford, Fowler, and Crowley County high schools competed at the Center Duals on Friday at the Vikings' gym.

The top-ranked Meloneers split their dual meets as they defeated sixth-ranked hotchkiss 31-21 and they lost to third-ranked Paonia 40-34. Six Rocky wrestlers won both of their matches in Michael Maldonado (106), Dillon Jaramillo (113), Santino Mendoza (126), Dylan Miell (132), Diego Reyes (160) and Greg Garcia (285).

Fifth-ranked Fowler also split its matches as it lost to seventh-ranked 42-38 and it defeated Del Norte 63-18. Seven Grizzlies went undefeated including Seth McFall (106), Dylan Palomino (145), Thomas Goeritz (160), Tyson Martinez (182), Dahlton McGhee (195), J.J. Horn (220), and Tyler Mullins (285).

Crowley County's results were unavailable.

Valley Classic

CENTER — Fowler and Crowley County remained in the San Luis Valley to compete in the Valley Classic on Saturday at Center's gym, and they were joined by Swink.

Fowler finished in fifth place with 141 points and it had eight placers. Two Grizzlies won their divisions in Seth McFall (106) and Dahlton McGhee (195). Also placing for Fowler were Tyson Martinez, who was third at 182, Dylan Palomino, who was fourth at 145, Cutler Hampton, who was fifth at 120, Seth Damgaard, who was fifth at 170, Tyler Mullins, who was fifth at 285, and Fernando Salazar, who was sixth at 113.

Crowley County was 10th with 82 points and it had five individual placers. Going to the awards stand for the Chargers were Jaden Harris, who was second at 138, Adam Schultz, who was second at 160, Jared Bauer, who was fourth at 152, Tanner Howells, who was sixth at 132, and Cannon Buford, who was sixth at 220.

Swink finished in 13th place with 40 points. The Lions were led by Justin Tucker, who won the 285-pound championship. Matthew Mendoza was fifth at 126.

Centauri won the meet with 188 1/2 points, followed by Buena Vista with 183, Paonia with 174 1/2, and Hotchkiss with 151.

This week's schedule

Most of the local schools will be in action again this week.

La Junta will be in Walsenburg on Friday for a quad meet and it will then head to Buena Vista for the Tri-Peaks League meet on Saturday.

Rocky Ford will be on the road for a dual meet against Mesa Ridge in Colorado Springs on Friday.

Fowler will have a dual meet at Peyton on Tuesday.

Crowley County will host its home tournament on Saturday. Also at this tournament will be Las Animas and County Line.
