FOWLER — The 2018-19 high school sports season got off to a start on Friday as the local boys' golf teams competed at the Fowler Invitational at the Cottonwood Links.
The season started the right way for the La Junta High School boys' team as it won the tournament by 16 strokes.
The Tigers also had some good individual performances as three members of the team finished in the Top 5.
"It's a good win," said LJ coach Aaron Pearson. "They struggled a little bit out there and they were not the scores they wanted to shoot. But like they said, they'll take the win."
Cody Schrock was the individual medalist with a seven-over-par 79. He tied for first with Monte Vista's Luke Hostaettler, but Schrock was awarded the championship after a scorecard playoff.
Following Schrock were Jay Paolucci, who finished in fourth place with and 85, and Chance Oquist, who was fifth with an 88.
Rounding out the Tigers' scores was Nate Paolucci, who finished in a tie for ninth place with a 96.
"We did good today, but we can play better," Pearson said. "They know that and they're a little frustrated, but they'll take it."
La Junta finished with a team score of 252.
Monte Vista was second with 268 and Swallows Charter Academy was third with 282.
Fowler, the host team, was fourth with 307. Leading the Grizzlies was Andrew Egan, who finished in third place among individuals with an 83.
Other Fowler scores included Christian Marsh with a 104 and Aaron Hildreth with a 117.
Two more Grizzlies played as extras. Stephen Hildreth shot a 126 and Luke Gonzales recorded a 138.
Rye was fifth with 307 and Rocky Ford was sixth with 311.
Levi Collins led the Meloneers as he also tied for ninth with a 96. Other Rocky scores included Josh Johnson with a 105, Martin Fernandez with a 110 and Demetrius Tenorio with a 139.
Rounding out the team scoring were Pueblo County in seventh place with 324, Pueblo East eighth with 332, Eads ninth with 334 and Cheyenne Wells 10th with 339. Florence and Lamar did not record team scores.
The local teams will be in action today as La Junta will host its home tournament. Tomorrow, they will be at the Trinidad Invitational.
"We'll try and improve on Monday and then right into Trinidad on Tuesday," Pearson said. "They're ready to show some better scores."
