The Otero Junior College volleyball played at home for the first time this season as the Lady Rattlers hosted the Otero Classic this past weekend at the McDivitt Center.
The Lady Rattlers faced some tough competition, but came away with three wins and one loss.
"Excellent fight," said OJC coach Jordan Willis. "We had some great teams here and no slouches at all. We're really excited to have this weekend turn in our favor."
OJC played twice on Friday and twice on Saturday.
Otero opened the tournament against North Platte (Neb.) Community College. The Lady Rattlers defeated the Lady Knights in three sets with the scores being 25-14, 25-22 and 25-10.
The Lady Rattlers' final match on Friday was against Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College. OJC won the first set 25-21, however, the Lady Warriors swept the next three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-19.
OJC's first match on Saturday was against Hesston (Kan.) College. The Lady Rattlers swept the Lady Larks 25-20, 25-18 and 25-20.
Otero's final match of the tournament was against Frank Phillips (Texas) College. The Plainsmen took the first set 25-13, but the Lady Rattlers took the next three 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21.
Indian Hills was the only team to go undefeated in the tournament. In addition to OJC, the Lady Warriors also defeated Lamar 25-19, 25-10 and 25-21, Trinidad State 25-18, 25-19, 25-19, and Frank Phillips 25-20, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-10.
Frank Phillips, Lamar and North Platte all went 2-2. Hesston went 1-3 and Trinidad State was 0-4.
Otero (8-1) will have three matches on the road this week. On Tuesday, the Lady Rattlers will head to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to take on Laramie County Community College. Then on Friday, they will play in the SoCo Classic in Trinidad and they will meet Dodge City (Kan.) and Clarendon (Texas).
"That's going to be a dogfight up there," Willis said. "It's always a tough place to play and they've gotten better. I know Laramie County is ranked right now and they're a good team. Then we're headed down to Trinidad for their tournament and we only have the two matches. But we're excited nonetheless. We're playing pretty good volleyball and I think we should keep producing good volleyball this week."
