ROCKY FORD — The eighth-ranked Rocky Ford High School softball team got an unexpected fight on its hands when it hosted Alamosa, which came in with a 4-7 record, Tuesday at Babcock Park.
Lady Mean Moose pitcher Emily Crowder kept the Lady Meloneers on their heels, and Alamosa also got good outfield play.
But Rocky fought off a late Alamosa rally and went on to win by a score of 4-1.
"They gave a really good fight," said Rocky coach J.C. Carrica. "The pitcher did a great job of not walking anybody. Maybe one or two the whole game. They kept us on our front side and we kept popping the ball up. Their defense was strong. Left and center fielders made some great catches. They hit the ball hard. I was really impressed with this team. This is a very good team. Their record does not indicate how good and how much potential they have."
Rocky Ford scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ally Bartholomew drew a leadoff walk and she stole second. She scored on Sadie Brewer's single.
The Lady Meloneers scored another run in the second. Niquole Knapp was safe on an error and she too stole second. Knapp came home on Karley Milberger's single to increase the lead to 2-0.
Rocky added another run in the fourth. Milberger led off with a walk and she went to second on Alisha Jaramillo's groundout. A passed ball put Milberger on third and she came home on Sydney McElroy's groundout.
The Lady Meloneers scored their final run in the sixth. McElroy walked, Bartholomew reached on an error and Chantae Rodriguez was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases. McElroy scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
Alamosa scored its only run in the top of the seventh. Amaya Atencio doubled and she came around to score on Alma Martinez's double.
Sadie Brewer went the distance for Rocky and she earned the win. She allowed one run and four hits and she also had seven strikeouts and no walks.
Crowder limited the Lady Meloneers only three hits. The hits were singles by Brewer, Milberger and Jaramillo.
Rocky Ford (11-5, 5-0 Tri-Peaks League) will travel to Colorado Springs on Thursday to face ninth-ranked St. Mary's. The Lady Meloneers defeated the Lady Pirates last Saturday 10-4, but that was a nonleague game. Thursday's game will count in the league standings.
"We anticipate their starting pitcher will be back after having a concussion last week and not having clearance for our home game," Carrica said. "So tomorrow, we'll turn the machine up a few notches and be ready for something faster."
