Lunch and Learn, Otero Junior College Commons
Liao Qiwen from Wuhan, Hubel Province, People’s Republic of China, has already become a Certified Nursing Assistant, as of last week. She hopes her nursing career will earn her a working permit in the U.S. to stay longer. She hopes to become a doctor.
Her presentation included a slide show of the cultural objects of China, a video produced by the Chinese government about the country, and a video of her home town of Wuhan, the largest city in Hubel Province in central China. It is actually three towns, intersected by two rivers. it covers an area of 8,494 square miles. It has three lakes, the largest of which is East Lake. A famous bicycle racer commented, “The trail around East Lake is the most beautiful I have ever ridden.” The video certainly backed him up.
When there was the inevitable trouble with the video, Liao adeptly ad libbed,“My hometown is a big city. I love it. It has very big shopping malls. The people are very kind.” Complimented on her English, she said they study English in school beginning at age six, but often the teachers do not understand the grammar very well. “My friends are helping me,” she said.
The next Lunch and Learn is planned for 12:15 Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Learning Commons in Wheeler Hall. It will feature Julia Skoba and Danis Gubayidulin from Russia.
