The sixth-ranked Fowler High School boys' basketball team won their first two Santa Fe League games of the season in late December.
Fowler 62, Rye 42
Fowler opened the league season by defeating Rye 62-42 on Dec. 21 in Rye.
The Grizzlies led 15-7 after the first quarter, but the Thunderbolts narrowed the deficit to 26-18 at halftime. Fowler then outscored Rye 22-4 in the third quarter to take a 48-22 lead at the end of the period.
Three Grizzlies scored in double figures. Val Leone led the team with 16 points, followed by Gabriel Proctor with 13 and Drew Egan with 10. Egan also led in rebounding with eight.
Fowler 55, John Mall 39
The Grizzlies won their second consecutive game as they defeated John Mall 55-39, Dec. 22 at Grizzly Gym.
Fowler took a 14-2 lead after the first quarter and it led 27-15 at halftime. Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter, with the Grizzlies possessing a 41-29 lead. The Griz outscored the Panthers 14-11 in the fourth quarter.
Leone led Fowler in scoring with 12 points and Quentin Flanscha scored 10. Egan was the top rebounder with nine.
Holly 54, Fowler 40
The Grizzlies were dealt their first league loss Saturday, when they were defeated by second-ranked Holly 54-40 in Holly.
Leone and Zane Denton both scored 13 points to lead the Grizzlies against the Wildcats.
Fowler plays twice at home
Fowler (5-3, 2-1) will play two home games this week. On Friday, it will host Swallows Charter Academy, with the first game to begin at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the Grizzlies will host Rocky Ford, beginning at noon.
