LOVELAND - The Fowler High School boys' basketball team went up against a familiar foe on Saturday as it faced Holly, which was the top-seed, in the Class 2A State Tournament third place game at the Budweiser Events Center.

The Grizzlies and Wildcats faced each other twice during the season, with Holly winning both of them. But the third time was the charm for Fowler as it scored a 54-45 win.

The Grizzlies used 3-point shooting to take the early lead. Zane Denton, Drew Egan and Val Leone all hit from behind the arc for a 9-0 lead. Kobe Davis scored Holly's first points, but Leone drained another trey to give Fowler a 12-2 advantage.

Michael Rushton hit two threes for Holly, but Gabriel Proctor also hit from long range for a 17-8 Fowler lead after the first quarter.

Gus Dominguez buried a trey for the Wildcats, but Johnathan Mobbley scored back-to-back layups to extend the lead to 21-11.Davis and Jarett Rushton both scored layups, but Mobbley scored again in the paint.

Erick Chaparro made two free throws and Austin Jensen drove for a layup to reduce the Holly deficit to 23-19. But Denton knocked down two jumpers and Mobbley scored at the buzzer to give Fowler a 29-19 lead at halftime.

Jarett Rushton split at the line to open the third quarter and Jensen made two consecutive layups to narrow the Fowler lead to 29-24. However, Mobbley made short jumper, Leone made two free throws and Mobbley tipped in a missed shot for a 35-24 Grizzlies advantage.

Jensen scored another layup, but Leone made two free tosses for a 37-26 Fowler lead after the third quarter.

Jensen began the fourth quarter with two layups, but Mobbley drained a 3-pointer to give Fowler a 40-28 advantage.

Michael Rushton made a jumper, but Leone made two more free throws. Jarett Rushton knocked down a jumper to close the deficit to 42-32 with 4:47 left in the game.

Fowler closed out the game with free throw shooting, making 10 out of 14 attempts. Brigden Parker kept Holly in the game, but Fowler held on for the win.

Three Grizzlies scored in double figures. Mobbley led the way with 17, follwed by Leone with 14 and Denton with 10.

Parker led the Wildcats with 12 points and Jensen scored 10.

Fowler finished the season with 22 wins and five losses. The Grizzlies won the Santa Fe LEague West Division, and the Region 8 championship.
