The Manzanola baseball team began their season against Cheyenne Wells mid-month and got off to a rough start.

The first game had Cheyenne Wells taking the lead in the second inning at 5-0 and never looked over their shoulders again, winning 8-0 in five.

Two seniors accounted for the Manzanola hits, with Dustin Carrol, Eithin Packer each getting doubles.

In the second contest, host Manaznola managed to score in the initial inning, but still fell behind 3-1.

It didn’t get any better after that, with a very good Tiger team scoring in every inning. The final: a disappointing 13-1 loss for the Bobcats.

Axel Escareno, Daniel Escareno and Eric Packer got one hit each.

“Last year’s baseball team was very successful and the kids played very well together,” commented second year Manzanola baseball coach Scott Egan. “We tied for first in the league and were narrowly defeated by Dove Creek in the district game last year.

"Our expectations leading into this year, to say the least, were very high, as we only lost one key starter due to graduation; and with some quality athletes coming up, it should be a great year.

“As the school year has progressed, two key players are not going to be with us this year due to injuries,” continued Egan. “We will continue without them, but we are going to have to shuffle some people around and strive toward perfection in fundamentals to be the team we hope to be.

"With hard work and dedication to details we hope to be as competitive as we were last year.”

The Bobcats were scheduled to play Holly Tuesday afternoon. Results were not available at press time.

Friday, Manzanola (0-2) hosts Eads (1-4) in a nonconference game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
