As Loretta Vickers said last week, “Nobody goes hungry in Fowler. If they do, it’s their own fault.”

The reason she can say this is that The Blackburn-Dennis Community Center provides not only a daily midday meal for the community at a nominal cost, but also frozen dinners for the days they are not open - Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The atmosphere at the center is friendly and neighborly, with many groups eating together.

The cost is $3 for 55 and older and five and under, $5 for those in between, but nobody is turned away and it’s strictly honor system. Cook Cheri Silcocks  prepares for 60 to 70 diners per meal and freezes any leftovers as meals for the weekend. Here are next week’s meals (sloppy Joes, onion rings and pudding are today’s meal):

Monday, Aug. 12 - Biscuits and gravy, fried potatoes and banana
Tuesday, Aug. 13 - Chicken-Cordon Bleu Casserole, vegetable medley, upside-down pineapple cake
Wednesday, Aug. 14 - Salisbury Beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread (home-made) and fruit cup
Thursday, Aug. 15 - Potluck.

For take out meals, please call by 10:30 a.m. (826-2035).

The center will be closed on Monday, Aug. 19.
