On Friday morning a fatal crash occureded in Bent County when a 2001 Toyota Corrolla travelling southbound did not yield and was struck by an Amtrak train travelling westbound.
The two victims were identified by the Colorado State Patrol as 35-year-old Samuel R. Cornejo who was driving and 35-year-old passenger Gabriela Martinez, both residents of Las Animas.
The State Patrol said the accident happened at 8:31 a.m. just west of Las Animas. When the car tried to pass was an intersection on County Road 8.75, near mile marker 397 on Highway 50.
The intersection where the crash occurred had railroad crossing markers, however it did not have a crossing gate or lights.
None of the 126 passengers and 12 crew members on the train sustained injuries and the train itself sustained no damage. After an investigation of the incident was concluded by the state patrol the train was able to continue on its journey.
Alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time according to the CSPD. The crash remains under investigation at the moment of publication.
