Two important 2/A Santa Fe league matches were on the slate for the Grizzlies this past Tuesday, Sept. 24 and Thursday, Sept 26.

Tuesday the undefeated (6-0) Fowler Grizzlies were pumped up and waiting on their home court for the (3-1) Crowley County Charger school bus from the town of Ordway to unload its cargo. “We had a good atmosphere at our home match against Crowley County,” said a proud Lindsay Whalen, Fowler Head Coach.

“It seems like games between Crowley County and Fowler are always close.”

The coach was right-on the money. The first set was all Fowler as the Grizzlies pulled ahead for the win at 25-13. The Chargers offense picked up their pace somewhat, but the Fowler team was playing their A-game and won impressively 25-16. The team from Ordway exploded at that point, taking the third set to stay alive winning 25-21.

But the Grizzlies knowing the Chargers competitive nature would have none of that. Fowler regained their focus going on to win the fourth battle of the match in style at 25-19, upping their record to 7-0.

Thursday came quickly for the Grizzlies with another rough league opponent ready to give their best, this time a road contest against the Hoehne Farmers.

The Farmers always make it a tough chore for any visitors coming to their town seeking a win on the Farmers home court.

“Hoehne is a very tenacious, well coached team,” continued the Grizzlies coach. “It is hard to believe they are 6-8."

The match was probably the most competitive of the season so far with the two teams going on streaks of exceptional play. The first and third sets went to the Farmers at 25-15, 25-23 and the second and fourth sets to the Grizzlies on identical scores of 25-18.

The fifth set went the way of the bear at 15-11 keeping the visiting Fowler team undefeated at 8-0.

Summing it all up coach Whalen said, “It was not our best match of the season, but we showed some fight and I am very proud of the resilience the girls demonstrated. Our team had to work for every point, and it was a great win for us.

“We had good showings from Kaley Pieper and Emily Flanscha.”

Next up for the Grizzlies is a road contest at Calhan Tuesday.
