The Fowler High School volleyball team qualified for the Class 2A State Tournament, while four other local teams saw their seasons come to an end.
The Lady Grizzlies advanced to state by winning the Class 2A Region 8 Tournament Friday at Grizzly Gym.
Fowler opened the tournament by defeating the Colorado Springs School in four sets. The Lady Kodiaks won the first set 27-25, but the Lady Grizzlies swept the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-22.
Fowler then defeated Sanford to win the regional championship. The Lady Grizzlies swept the Lady Indians by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21.
Fowler (18-7) will be the eighth seed and it will face ninth-seeded Dolores in the first match of the tournament at the Denver Coliseum Thursday beginning at 8 a.m. Should the Lady Grizzlies win, they will face top-seeded Denver Christian Thursday at approximately 2 p.m. Should Fowler lose, it will play in the elimination bracket against either Limon, Del Norte or West Grand Friday at 11 a.m.
The La Junta High School volleyball team fell one match short of the Class 3A State Tournament as it finished second in the Region 12 Tournament Friday at Bruce Randolph High School in Denver.
The Lady Tigers first defeated Resurrection Christian in five sets. The Lady Cougars won the first set 25-17, but La Junta won the second 25-23. Rez Christian took the third set 25-23, but the Lady Tigers swept the final two sets 25-15 and 15-9.
La Junta then faced Denver Science and Tech-Montview, the host team, in the regional championship. The Lady Knights took the first set 25-22, but the Lady Tigers won the second set 32-30. DSST-Montview won the final two sets 25-19 and 25-20.
La Junta finished the season with 17 losses and seven losses.
The Swink High School volleyball team also fell a match short of the Class 2A State Tournament after finishing in a first-place tie in the Region 11 Tournament Saturday in Del Norte.
The Lady Lions first faced Holyoke and Swink swept the Lady Dragons by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18.
Swink then took on host Del Norte. The Lady Lions won the first set 25-20, but the Lady Tigers won the next three 25-18, 25-23 and 26-24.
Holyoke defeated Del Norte to end the tournament in a three-way tie. A tie-breaker was instituted and Del Norte defeated both Swink and Holyoke in one-set playoffs.
Swink's final record was 16 wins and nine losses.
The Rocky Ford High School volleyball team traveled to Julesburg for the Class 2A Region 9 Tournament on Friday.
The Lady Meloneers lost both of their matches. First, they lost to Sedgwick County in four sets. The Lady Cougars won the first set 25-23, but Rocky won the second 25-18. Sedgwick County won the next two 25-16 and 27-25.
Rocky then lost to Fountain Valley in four sets. The Lady Meloneers won the first set 25-21, but the Lady Danes swept the next three by scores of 25-12, 25-23 and 25-20.
Rocky Ford had a final record of 13 wins and 11 losses.
The Cheraw High School volleyball team competed in the Class 1A Region F Tournament Saturday at the Lamar Community Building.
The Lady Wolverines first faced Wiley and lost in five sets. Cheraw won the first set 25-22, but the Lady Panthers won the next two by identical scores of 25-14. The Lady Wolverines won the fourth set 25-20, however, Wiley won the fifth 15-5.
The Lady Wolverines then took on South Baca in their final match. Since Wiley also defeated South Baca, the Cheraw/South Baca match was a two-set contest with the Lady Patriots winning 25-16 and 25-13.
Cheraw ended the season with 12 wins and 12 losses.
