The Fowler team greeted the 7-14 Swallow Hill Academy Spartan five on the Grizzlies court Tuesday Feb. 18, the last regular season conference match-up before the league begins the playoff round action.
The Grizzlies scored first then dropped behind, but by the end of the first quarter the team had bounced back to lead by a basket at 18-16.
From the very start of the second quarter the Grizzlies owned the court going on a 14-2 run to take command of the game. By the break the Spartans from the Academy had a short run of there-own, but the Fowler-five non-the-less had a 35-25 advantage.
The Spartans offense was nearly completely shut down in the third quarter by a Grizzlies smothering defense ands for all intents the host team had the game in hand at 48-29.
The 6’ 6” inch Grizzlies senior Johnathan Mobbley was unstoppable in the paint and was aided down deep by his partner in wearing out the net, junior Val Leone.
The Fowler teamwork on offense and defense carried on through to the horn winning 66-40 for another Conference win. It can’t be emphasized enough that the Grizzlies, as they have all year, continue to play team basketball with seven other players scoring in the contest.
Individual and Team stats on the game: Val Leone 11 points 4-8 shooting, Johnathan 33 points 14-20 shooting; Gabriel Proctor 3 assists, 4 steals; Team shooting 23-56 for 41%, 17-19 free throw shooting.
Fowler ended the Santa Fe League play perfect at 13-0 in first place and finished the season with an outstanding overall record of 17-2. The Grizzlies are 6th in Colorado 2/A rankings and are the number one seed in the 2/A Districy-6 Tournament that started this past Monday with the Grizzlies against Swink and will continue with the semi-final round today and the championship round Friday at La Junta High School.
