Dorothy Murray

Dorothy Murray was born in Goodson, Missouri September 17, 1920 to Mattie (Winfrey) and Henry "Clark" Roberts. The family moved to Colorado in 1922 living in Matheson, Colorado before settling on a homestead north of Onley Springs, Colorado. She attended some school in Onley Spring and then Bluff Springs in a one room school house. Transportation to school was on horseback with her brother and sister. During the 1930's & 1940's most of the pastures were open range but the fields were fenced to keep the livestock out of the crops. Her dad and brother, Lee farmed many years with mules, growing corn, pinto beans, maize and cane. They had about 20 milk cows and every day Dorothy and Neta (her sister) rode the horse to gather the cows. They all lived through the Great Depression, through sand storms and of course World War II. When Dorothy was in her teens she sometimes lived with other families helping with housework and children. Dorothy moved to Pueblo, Colorado in 1944 where she was employed by Crews-Beggs Department Store. She worked in the office. While working at Crews-Beggs she met Van Murray. They were married March 13, 1950. One daughter, Phyllis was born. In 1957 the family moved north of Ordway, CO and then to Fowler, CO in 1963. Van passed away in January 1969. Dorothy continued living in Fowler where she worked for Johnny King Cattle Co. and Stahly Real Estate Agency. In 1993 Dorothy moved to Craig, CO to be near her daughter Phyllis. Through the years Dorothy was active with Bethel Methodist Church in Pueblo and 1st Christian Church in Ordway and Fowler. She loved to sew and made clothes for family and others. Her house and yard were always immaculate. She was a good friend to all who knew her and would do whatever she could to help anyone who needed it. She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Dorothy passed away peacefully on February 20, 2021 at the Walbridge Wing Nursing Facility in Meeker, CO.
