Manzanola football ekes out 53-50 win over Kim/Branson
A fast start led to a wild finish Friday as Manzanola topped visiting Kim/Branson 53-50 in six-man football.
The first quarter was an indication of the type of action-packed game in store for those watching. Kim Branson took the opening drive down the field and scored, but Manzanola's Dalton Carroll took the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown.
“We opened up the passing game in the second quarter mainly because their run defense was so stout,” Bobcats coach Scott Egan said. “We took the lead by halftime and started the second half with a Blake Williams kickoff return for another special-teams touchdown, and for the rest of that quarter we could do no wrong.”
"We led 53-24 after three quarters and then anything that could go wrong, did,” Egan said.
One big thing that did go right for the hometown team was the key play of the game as the defense put up a wall when it counted. On fourth and goal with about a minute left in the game the Manzanola six put helmet-on-helmet to hold the visitors out of the endzone.
“Special teams and our passing game kept us in this game,” Egan said. “We definitely have some things to work on this week as we play a Cheraw team that gave Granada all they could handle last week.”
Manzanola will travel to Cheraw Friday with game time set for a 7 p.m. start.
